LLM SEO: What It Means and How to Do It in 2026
A new label for a real shift: buyers ask a language model before they search. Here is what LLM SEO actually involves, how it differs (barely) from AEO and GEO, the audit checklist we use, and where tools and services fit.
LLM SEO is the practice of optimizing a website so large language models such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity can retrieve it and cite it when answering a user's question. It builds on classic SEO: the pages still need to be indexed and rank, but they also need to be quotable and consistent.
The term took off in 2025 as founders noticed that a growing share of buyers ask an assistant "which tool should I use for X" before they ever type it into Google. This guide covers the definition, how it relates to the other labels, the strategy, an audit checklist you can run this week, and a short section on tools and services.
What LLM SEO Means
A large language model answers in one of two ways. From memory, using whatever it learned in training, or by searching, where it retrieves a handful of live pages and writes an answer grounded in them, usually with citations. LLM SEO is almost entirely about the second path, because that is the one you can influence this quarter. Retrieval is where the model decides which pages to read, and citation is where it decides which of those to credit.
So the definition is narrow on purpose: get retrieved, get cited. Everything in this guide serves one of those two steps.
How It Relates to AEO and GEO
You will see three labels for the same work. Answer engine optimization is the older term and frames it from the search product's side. Generative engine optimization came out of academic work on how generated answers pick sources. LLM SEO is what people say when they think of it from the model's side. The goals are identical and the tactics overlap almost entirely. We keep separate guides for answer engine optimization and AEO vs GEO if you want the history. This page skips the naming debate and gets on with the work.
How LLMs Find and Cite Pages
Every assistant that searches has three parts: a crawler that builds or feeds an index, a retrieval step that pulls candidate pages for a query, and a generation step that writes the answer and decides what to cite. The crawlers are separate from the training crawlers at every major vendor, so you can opt out of training and stay in search. The indexes differ: ChatGPT leans on Bing plus OpenAI's own crawl, Google's AI features use Google, Perplexity runs a live search each time.
The engine-specific detail, including a crawler-by-crawler table, is in our ChatGPT SEO guide. For this page, the takeaway is that each engine needs three things from you: permission to crawl, presence in its index, and a page worth quoting.
LLM SEO Strategy: Five Things That Matter
- Access and indexing first. Allow the search crawlers in robots.txt. Verify in Bing Webmaster Tools and turn on IndexNow so Bing (and therefore ChatGPT) sees new pages fast. Clear your Search Console indexing verdicts on the Google side.
- Answer first on every page. The opening paragraph answers the page's question in two or three sentences a model could quote. Move the story, the context and the pitch below it.
- Build the pages assistants get asked about. Pricing, "what is" for your category, one comparison page per main competitor, an alternatives page, and short how-to guides for the jobs your product does. These are the questions people actually put to a model.
- Keep the facts consistent. Models cross-check. Your pricing page, docs, G2 profile, LinkedIn and Crunchbase should all say the same thing about what you do, who it is for and what it costs. A single facts sheet, applied everywhere, does more than most content tactics.
- Measure citations, not just rankings. Write down twenty buyer prompts and record which brands and URLs each engine cites. Repeat monthly. Rankings still matter (Google's AI features mostly cite pages that already rank), but citation share is the number this work moves.
The LLM SEO Audit Checklist
This is the checklist we run before touching content. Work down it in order; the early rows gate the later ones.
| Area | What to check | Typical fix |
|---|---|---|
| Crawler access | robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot and Googlebot. Training bots (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended) are a separate decision. | Edit robots.txt, re-check after CDN or CMS changes. |
| Index coverage | Key pages are indexed in Google and Bing. New pages reach Bing within a day. | Verify in Bing Webmaster Tools, turn on IndexNow, fix Search Console verdicts. |
| Direct answers | Every commercial and guide page answers its main question in the first paragraph, in two or three quotable sentences. | Rewrite the opening of each page. Move the answer above the backstory. |
| Question-shaped headings | H2s match how buyers phrase questions. Each section stands alone. | Rename vague headings. Split sections that answer two things. |
| Liftable facts | Pricing, plans, limits, integrations, who it is for, and founding facts are stated plainly and match across site, docs and listings. | Build one facts sheet, align every page and third-party profile to it. |
| Comparison coverage | A page exists for each 'X vs Y' and 'best tools for Z' question in your category. | Write honest comparison and alternatives pages. |
| Freshness | Pages show a visible updated date and reference the current year where it matters. | Set a review cadence for the pages that get cited. |
| Structure and schema | Real headings, lists and tables. FAQPage markup where a page has FAQs. Organization schema is accurate. | Use a schema generator; remove markup that does not match visible content. |
| Citation baseline | You have a recorded list of buyer prompts and which brands and URLs each engine cites for them. | Run the prompts monthly by hand or with a tracker. |
Most sites fail the first two rows without knowing it. A CDN bot-protection default, a robots.txt copied from a template, or a site that was never verified in Bing will quietly remove you from AI answers before content quality comes into it. Mavek's SEO agent runs the crawl, robots and sitemap checks in the first three rows automatically, and you can run them on your own site with a free SEO audit on the 14-day trial.
LLM SEO Tools
Two categories, and you probably need one of each. Tracking tools run your prompts across AI engines on a schedule and report citation share by brand and URL; Profound, Peec AI and Scrunch are the names you will hear most, and we compare them in our guide to the best AI visibility tools. Execution tools do the fixes: crawling, keyword research, briefs, drafting, schema, publishing and rank tracking. AirOps sits between the two: a content workflow platform that tracks AI search and drafts page refreshes against it. Mavek's SEO agent covers the execution side, and its AI visibility tracker covers tracking across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. LLM SEO Services
If you are searching for an LLM SEO agency or company, the honest answer is that most of this work is checklist-driven and a lean team can do it. Where outside help earns its place is capacity: somebody has to rewrite the pages, build the comparison set, keep the facts aligned and check citations every month. Mavek's SEO and AEO service does that as a done-for-you engagement on the same platform. AI agents handle the crawl, research and drafting; real marketers review strategy and nothing goes live without approval. Plans start at $125 a month if you would rather run it yourself; see pricing.
What LLM SEO Does Not Do
It does not change what a model says from memory. If an assistant describes your product wrongly without searching, that comes from training data, and the fix is slow and indirect: consistent facts published widely enough to make it into the next training run.
It does not guarantee citations. Engines pick a few sources per answer and vary between runs. Measure share across many prompts over time, not one screenshot.
It does not skip ranking. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode mostly draw on pages that already rank, so the classic work still comes first.
And it does not require a special file. No AI sitemap, no new markup, and llms.txt is not read by any major engine as of 2026; our llms.txt guide covers what it is and is not.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is LLM SEO?
LLM SEO is the practice of making your website retrievable and citable by large language models such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity when they answer a user's question. It covers crawler access, indexing in the engines those models search, and writing pages with direct, quotable answers and consistent facts. It sits alongside classic SEO rather than replacing it.
Is LLM SEO the same as AEO or GEO?
Mostly. Answer engine optimization (AEO) and generative engine optimization (GEO) describe the same goal of appearing in AI-generated answers. LLM SEO is the label people use when they think of it from the model's side: how a language model finds, reads and quotes a page. The tactics overlap almost entirely.
How do you do LLM SEO?
Start with access: allow the search crawlers from OpenAI, Perplexity, Anthropic and Google, and get your pages indexed in both Google and Bing. Then rewrite key pages so the answer comes first, headings match real questions, and facts such as pricing and integrations are stated plainly and consistently. Finally, record which prompts cite you and check them monthly.
What is an LLM SEO audit?
An LLM SEO audit checks whether AI engines can reach and quote your site. It covers robots.txt rules for AI crawlers, index coverage in Google and Bing, whether pages open with a direct answer, heading structure, fact consistency across your properties, freshness signals, schema accuracy, and a baseline of which buyer prompts currently cite you and your competitors.
What are the best LLM SEO tools?
There are two kinds. Tracking tools such as Profound, Peec AI and Scrunch run prompts across AI engines and report which brands and URLs get cited. Execution tools handle the actual fixes: crawling, content briefs, schema, publishing and rank tracking. Mavek combines tracking with an SEO agent that does the execution work inside one platform.
Do I need an LLM SEO agency?
Not necessarily. The audit and most of the fixes are within reach of a founder or a lean team with a checklist. Outside help makes sense when nobody has time to rewrite the pages and keep the facts aligned. Mavek's done-for-you SEO and AEO service pairs its AI agents with real marketers who review everything before it goes live.
