Best AI SEO Tools in 2026: 10 Tools Compared on What They Actually Do

The best AI SEO tools in 2026 split into two groups: tools that report what is wrong with your site and tools that fix it. Surfer, Clearscope, Semrush and Ahrefs lead the first group. Mavek, Search Atlas OTTO and Alli AI lead the second. This guide compares ten of them on real features, verified pricing, and where each one falls short.

How This List Was Built

Every price below was checked on the vendor's own pricing page in September 2026. Feature claims are limited to what the vendor states or what we have used. This list is strictly SEO tools. General AI marketing platforms are covered in our AI marketing tools comparison, and tools that track your brand inside ChatGPT and Perplexity are covered in the best AI visibility tools guide.

One disclosure up front: we build Mavek, so weigh that. It is listed first because it is ours, not because we ran a bake-off.

1. Mavek

What it is: An AI marketing platform for founders and lean teams. The SEO agent crawls your site, audits pages, researches and clusters keywords, finds competitor keyword gaps, writes briefs, drafts articles, publishes to WordPress, and tracks rankings daily on desktop and mobile. Real marketers review the strategy and nothing goes live without your approval.

Best for: Teams with no in-house SEO who want the loop from query to live page closed, with a human sign-off at each gate.

AI features that are real: Keyword expansion and clustering from a single seed, competitor gaps, brief and draft generation, WordPress publishing, and rank tracking with a movers report (what rose, what fell, which URL). All callable from chat.

Pricing: Plans from $125 per month (Starter), with Growth at $499, Scale at $1,299 and Enterprise from $2,500, as of September 2026. A free SEO audit on the 14-day trial is the cheapest way to see it on your own site.

Where it falls short: It is not a research suite. There is no backlink index or historical keyword database of the kind Semrush and Ahrefs maintain, and rank tracking covers six markets today, not every country. See what AI SEO means at Mavek for the full capability list and the honest limits.

2. Surfer

What it is: A content optimization editor. You write a draft, Surfer compares it to the pages ranking for your target query, and scores it on terms, structure and length. It now includes Surfy, an AI writing assistant, and AI prompt tracking on higher plans.

Best for: Writers and editors who publish often and want a number to hit before they press publish.

AI features that are real: Surfy drafting inside the editor, one-click optimization, internal linking suggestions, and prompt tracking on the AI Search Analytics, Pro and Peace of Mind plans.

Pricing: Discovery at $49 per month, Standard at $99, Pro at $182 and Peace of Mind at $299, all billed yearly, as of September 2026. Surfer renamed its plans this year, so older reviews quoting Essential or Scale are out of date.

Where it falls short: Surfer optimizes the page in its editor. It does not crawl your site, fix technical issues, or publish for you, and the content score can push writers toward term stuffing if chased blindly.

3. Clearscope

What it is: A content grading tool for editorial teams. Reports show which terms and questions the top results cover, and each draft gets a grade. In 2026 it added Topic Explorations, AI drafts, and prompt tracking across ChatGPT and Gemini.

Best for: Content teams with a defined editorial process who want every piece graded against the same bar.

AI features that are real: Monthly AI drafts, topic exploration from a seed, and tracked prompts that show when your brand appears in ChatGPT and Gemini answers.

Pricing: Essentials at $129 per month with 50 pages, 50 tracked prompts, 20 topic explorations and 20 drafts. Business at $399 per month. Custom enterprise tier. Month to month, no contracts, as of September 2026.

Where it falls short: Clearscope reports. It grades the draft; it does not apply changes, publish, or touch technical health. It is also one of the pricier options per page for small teams.

4. Semrush

What it is: The largest SEO suite: keyword research, site audit, position tracking, competitor analysis, and now AI search tracking in most plans. Copilot, its AI assistant, summarizes your data and flags what changed.

Best for: Teams that want Google rank data, keyword databases and AI visibility reports from one login.

AI features that are real: Copilot is included with every plan. The Content Toolkit (the rebranded ContentShake AI) generates articles and briefs as a separate add-on. Tracked AI prompts start on the Starter tier.

Pricing: The SEO plan is $139 per month. Starter (SEO plus AI Search) is $199, Pro+ is $299, Advanced is $549, monthly billing, with about 17 percent off annually, as of September 2026.

Where it falls short: Semrush reports. Nothing it finds gets fixed unless you or a developer does it, and the AI features are a layer over the reports rather than a workflow that ships pages. More in Mavek vs Semrush.

5. Ahrefs

What it is: The other big research suite, strongest on backlink data. AI features are an assist layer: AI Content Helper, AI Content Grader, and AI keyword suggestions on higher tiers. Brand Radar, its AI visibility product, is a separate add-on.

Best for: Anyone whose SEO work starts with links and competitor research.

AI features that are real: AI Content Helper for drafting and improving pages, AI Content Grader, and Brand Radar for tracking mentions across AI engines (priced separately).

Pricing: Starter at $29 per month, Lite at $129, Standard at $249, Advanced at $449, Enterprise at $1,499 with annual commitment. Brand Radar AI starts at $199 per month on top of a plan, as of September 2026. A free tier exists.

Where it falls short: Ahrefs reports. No publishing, no automated fixes, and the AI writing tools are lighter than a dedicated editor like Surfer. Brand Radar pushes the real cost of AI visibility well above the base plan.

6. Frase

What it is: A brief-to-draft-to-publish tool. Frase researches the SERP, builds a brief, drafts the article, scores it for SEO and GEO, and publishes to WordPress, Webflow, Sanity or Wix.

Best for: Solo operators and small teams running a content loop on one to five sites.

AI features that are real: AI drafting, SEO and GEO scoring, AI visibility monitoring, Content Guard decay monitoring, and autonomous publishing to supported CMSs.

Pricing: Starter at $49 per month ($39 annual) with 10 articles and 50 audit pages. Professional at $129 ($103 annual). Scale at $299 ($239 annual), as of September 2026.

Where it falls short: Article caps are tight on lower tiers, and Frase is a content tool first. Technical SEO and rank tracking across markets are not its strengths.

7. SE Ranking

What it is: A full SEO suite priced for agencies: rank tracking, site audit, backlink monitoring, keyword research, and an AI Search add-on covering AI Overviews, AI Mode, Perplexity and ChatGPT.

Best for: Agencies managing many client projects who need white-label reports.

AI features that are real: The AI Search add-on with a brand mention dashboard, and an AI writer inside the Content Marketing add-on.

Pricing: Core at $129 per month ($103.20 annual) with 2,000 tracked keywords. Growth at $279 ($223.20 annual). AI Search add-on at $89 per month extra. 14-day free trial, as of September 2026.

Where it falls short: SE Ranking reports. Good dashboard; the fixes, drafts and publishing still happen somewhere else.

8. Search Atlas (OTTO)

What it is: An SEO suite whose headline product, OTTO, applies technical and on-page changes to your site through an installed script: titles, meta descriptions, schema, internal links and content, without a developer.

Best for: Sites with a backlog of on-page issues and no engineering time to clear them.

AI features that are real: OTTO's automated on-page and technical fixes, AI content generation, and site health monitoring across every site you manage.

Pricing: Starter at $79 per month, Growth at $159, Pro at $319, with agency plans from $999. OTTO is included on every tier, as of September 2026.

Where it falls short: Script-injected changes are a layer over your CMS rather than a change in it, and you need to review what OTTO deploys. Strategy and human review are on you.

9. Alli AI

What it is: A bulk on-page optimization tool. Install a JavaScript snippet and Alli pushes thousands of title, meta, heading and content changes across a site, and serves pre-rendered pages to AI crawlers.

Best for: Large sites with repetitive on-page problems and a team that wants to approve changes in bulk.

AI features that are real: Bulk on-page deployment, AI crawler pre-rendering, keyword tracking, and site speed optimization.

Pricing: Business at $249 per month with 5 sites and 500 keywords. Agency at $499 with 15 sites. Custom enterprise tier, as of September 2026.

Where it falls short: Same caveat as OTTO: snippet changes are a layer, not a source-of-truth edit. Alli is not a research or content tool, and the entry price is higher than most suites here.

10. Writesonic

What it is: An AI content platform that has pivoted toward SEO and AI search. Plans bundle AI articles, site audits, and tracking across ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews.

Best for: Teams that want content volume and a basic AI visibility read from one subscription.

AI features that are real: AI article generation, site audits, prompt tracking across three AI platforms, and an Action Center that is still in trial form on public plans.

Pricing: Starter at $79 per month with 15 articles and 50 tracked prompts. Basic at $199. Growth at $399, as of September 2026.

Where it falls short: Execution features are trial runs outside enterprise, and full engine coverage is enterprise only. Writesonic writes well; it does not yet run your SEO.

Comparison Table

Starting prices are the lowest published tier as of September 2026, monthly billing unless noted. "Executes" means the tool changes your site or publishes pages. "Reports" means it tells you what to change.

AI Topic Generators

An AI topic generator takes a seed keyword or a competitor domain and returns clusters of queries grouped into topics that deserve their own page. The good ones also tell you which cluster to build first.

Three tools here do it natively. Clearscope's Topic Explorations are on every plan with a monthly cap. Semrush's Content Toolkit has a Topic Finder. Mavek's SEO agent expands a seed into the full query set, clusters it by intent, and ranks the clusters by volume and difficulty. A general chatbot with a structured prompt gets you most of the way there for free; we published it in the keyword clustering prompt.

Free AI SEO Tools

Free options exist, but each covers one job. Ahrefs has a free tier with limited data. Semrush Copilot is free only inside a paid Semrush plan. Most tools here offer a trial. For single tasks, our free tools cover schema markup, FAQ schema, and SERP previews. If you need a full AI SEO platform, expect to pay.

How to Choose

Start with one question: do you need a tool that reports, or a tool that executes? It is the distinction we use on our AI SEO page, and it sorts this whole list.

Reporting tools (Semrush, Ahrefs, SE Ranking, Clearscope) are the right buy when you already have people to act on the findings. If that team does not exist, the reports pile up.

Executing tools (Mavek, Search Atlas OTTO, Alli AI, and Frase for content) are the right buy when the bottleneck is hands, not information. They ship the change. The trade is that you have to trust the review process, so look hard at how each tool gates what goes live. Automated publishing with no approval step produces a hundred pages that say nothing.

Then check three things: does it connect to where your data lives (Search Console, GA4, your CMS), does it cover the markets you sell in, and what happens if you cancel. A reporting tool leaves you with exports; an executing tool may leave you with a script to remove.

What This List Does Not Cover

Jasper is left out on purpose: it is a marketing content platform with some SEO features, compared separately in Mavek vs Jasper. AirOps is left out for a similar reason: it is a content engineering platform for teams that build their own workflows, covered in our AirOps review. Tools whose only job is tracking brand mentions inside ChatGPT and Perplexity (Profound, Peec, Scrunch) belong in the AI visibility tools guide. And no tool on this list earns links, produces original data, or knows your positioning. Those still come from you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an AI SEO tool?

An AI SEO tool uses language models or machine learning to do search engine optimization work: auditing a site, researching and clustering keywords, writing briefs and drafts, applying on-page fixes, or tracking rankings. The useful distinction in 2026 is whether the tool reports a problem or executes the fix. Most tools marketed as AI SEO still only report.

What is the best AI SEO tool in 2026?

It depends on what you need done. For content optimization, Surfer and Clearscope lead. For research and rank data, Semrush and Ahrefs. For automated on-page fixes, Search Atlas OTTO and Alli AI. For an AI marketing platform that researches, drafts, publishes and tracks with a human approving each step, Mavek. There is no single best tool for every team.

Are there free AI SEO tools?

Yes, but they are narrow. Ahrefs has a free tier, Semrush Copilot is free inside any Semrush plan, and most tools offer trials. Mavek publishes free schema, FAQ schema and SERP preview generators. A general chatbot with a good prompt handles keyword clustering and topic generation for nothing. Full AI SEO platforms are paid.

Can AI SEO tools actually improve rankings?

They can shorten the time between finding a problem and fixing it, and they can produce briefs and drafts faster than a person starting from a blank page. They cannot manufacture links, original data, or authority. Rankings improve when the work ships, so tools that execute tend to produce results sooner than tools that only report.

What is an AI topic generator?

An AI topic generator takes a seed keyword or a competitor domain and returns clusters of related queries grouped into page-worthy topics. Clearscope, Semrush and Mavek include one. You can also get most of the way there with a general chatbot and a structured clustering prompt.

Is an AI SEO tool the same as an AI visibility tool?

No. AI SEO tools work on Google and Bing rankings. AI visibility tools measure whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews mention your brand when someone asks a question in your category. Several SEO suites now bundle both, but the jobs are different. We cover the visibility side in a separate guide.

Want the SEO done, not just reported?

Mavek crawls, researches, drafts, publishes and tracks, with a real marketer reviewing every step before it goes live.
