ChatGPT SEO: How to Show Up in ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity

Three engines, three different ways of choosing what to cite. This is the engine-by-engine version: how each one retrieves pages, which crawlers actually matter, what kind of page gets quoted, and how to check whether you are in the answer today.

ChatGPT SEO means making your pages easy for ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity to retrieve and quote. Each engine searches a different index, so the work is: get indexed where each one looks, allow the right crawlers, and publish pages that answer a buyer's question in the first paragraph with facts that are easy to lift.

The good news is that most of it is ordinary SEO done a little more carefully. The bad news is that the details differ by engine, and a lot of advice online treats them as one thing. They are not.

The Three Engines Are Not the Same

ChatGPT search, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, and Perplexity all do the same job on the surface: read the web, write an answer, link the pages they used. Under the hood they retrieve from different places. ChatGPT leans on Bing plus OpenAI's own crawl. Google uses Google. Perplexity runs its own live search on every question. If a page is missing from one of those indexes, it cannot be cited by that engine, whatever else you do.

So the first question in any ChatGPT SEO plan is not "what should I write" but "can each engine even see the page". Answer that, then write.

How ChatGPT Search Retrieves Pages

OpenAI's own documentation says ChatGPT search draws on third-party search providers and on content from partners. Bing is the named provider, which is why the Bing index has been the practical route into ChatGPT since search launched. OpenAI also runs its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot, to build the index used for ChatGPT's search features, and industry analysis in 2026 suggests the mix is now hybrid: Bing results plus OpenAI's own crawl plus other providers depending on the query.

What that means for you:

  • Be in Bing. Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools (it imports from Search Console in one click) and turn on IndexNow so new and updated pages reach Bing in hours instead of weeks. The full setup is in our IndexNow guide. Google does not support IndexNow, so this is a separate track from your Google work.
  • Allow OAI-SearchBot. This is the crawler that decides whether you can appear in ChatGPT search answers. Blocking GPTBot (the training crawler) does not affect it, and vice versa.
  • Expect no citations from memory. When ChatGPT answers without searching, it uses training data and cites nothing. You cannot optimize for that directly. Search-backed answers are the ones that link out.

How Google AI Overviews and AI Mode Pick Sources

Google's Search Central documentation is unusually direct here. There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, no special schema, and no machine-readable AI file to add. Pages need to meet the normal technical requirements for Search and be eligible for snippets. Both features may use a query fan-out: the system issues several related searches across subtopics, then assembles an answer from the pages those searches return.

Two practical consequences. First, pages that already rank well for the topic are the ones most likely to be pulled in, so ordinary ranking work still comes first. Second, because of the fan-out, a page can be cited for answering one sub-question well even if it is not the top result for the head term. A guide with clear sections that each answer a specific question has more chances to be picked than a single long essay.

One common mistake: blocking Google-Extended in robots.txt does not remove you from AI Overviews. Google-Extended controls training and grounding for Gemini and some other Google products. AI features inside Search run on Googlebot, and the only controls that affect them are the snippet controls (nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet) and noindex.

If you want the broader Google-side framework, our answer engine optimization guide covers it, and AEO vs GEO explains where the two labels overlap.

How Perplexity Retrieves

Perplexity runs a live web search for every question, reads the candidate pages, and writes an answer with numbered inline citations. It is a standalone product, not a layer on top of one search engine, and it cites more sources per answer than ChatGPT or Google typically do. Its documentation describes two agents: PerplexityBot, which surfaces and links sites in results and is not used for training, and Perplexity-User, which fetches a page because a person asked a question and generally does not follow robots.txt for that reason.

Industry citation analyses in 2026, and our own spot checks, point the same way: Perplexity leans toward recently published or updated pages and gives real weight to community discussion (Reddit threads show up constantly). That makes it the engine where freshness and a plain, direct answer pay off fastest. It is also the easiest engine to audit by hand, because every claim carries a visible citation number.

Crawler Access: What Each Bot Actually Controls

Most sites have never looked at which AI crawlers they allow. Some have blocked all of them in a panic and quietly removed themselves from AI search. Here is what each one does, from the vendors' own documentation as of September 2026.

CrawlerOwnerWhat it controlsIf you want citations
OAI-SearchBot OpenAI Whether your pages can be shown and linked in ChatGPT search answers. Blocked sites can still appear as plain navigational links. Changes take about 24 hours to apply. Allow
GPTBot OpenAI Whether your content is used to train OpenAI's foundation models. Has no effect on ChatGPT search results. Your call
ChatGPT-User OpenAI Page fetches triggered by a user's question or a custom GPT. Not automatic crawling, and not used to decide search appearance. Allow
Googlebot Google Everything in Google Search, including AI Overviews and AI Mode. Fine-tune with nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet or noindex. Allow
Google-Extended Google Training and grounding for Gemini and some other Google systems. Does not affect whether you appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Your call
PerplexityBot Perplexity Whether your pages can be surfaced and linked in Perplexity answers. Not used for model training. Respects robots.txt. Allow
Perplexity-User Perplexity Fetches made because a user asked a question. Perplexity says this agent generally ignores robots.txt because a person requested the page. n/a
Claude-SearchBot Anthropic Whether your pages are indexed for Claude's search answers. ClaudeBot is the separate training crawler, Claude-User the user-triggered fetch. Allow

The pattern is the same at every vendor: one crawler for training, one for search, one for user-triggered fetches. You can opt out of training and stay in search. Check your robots.txt today, then re-check it after any CMS or CDN change, because bot-blocking defaults have a habit of switching themselves on.

Content Patterns That Get Cited

Across all three engines, the pages that get quoted share a shape. None of this is exotic.

  • Answer first. The first paragraph under the H1 answers the question in two or three sentences a model could quote verbatim. Everything else supports it.
  • One question per section. H2s phrased the way people ask ("How much does X cost", "Does X work with Y"), each followed by a self-contained answer. This is what query fan-out rewards.
  • Facts that can be lifted. Prices, limits, dates, integrations, a plain "who it is for" line. Vague positioning copy gives an engine nothing to cite.
  • Consistent facts everywhere. Engines cross-check. If your pricing page, your G2 listing and your docs disagree, you become a risky source. Keep them aligned.
  • Comparisons and alternatives. "X vs Y" and "best tools for Z" pages are among the most frequently cited formats because those are the questions people actually ask an assistant. Be honest in them; engines and readers both notice one-sided comparisons.
  • Freshness markers. A visible updated date and a current year in the content. Perplexity in particular leans toward recent pages.
  • Clean structure. Real headings, real lists, real tables, FAQ markup where a page genuinely has FAQs. Our FAQ schema generator handles the markup.

If your product is a SaaS, the page types to build first are the pricing page, the "what is" page for your category, one comparison page per main competitor, and a short set of how-to guides for the jobs your product does. Our SEO for SaaS guide lays out that order.

How to Check Whether You Are Cited

Do this by hand before you buy anything. Write down the ten to twenty questions a buyer would ask an assistant about your category: "best X for Y", "X vs Z", "how much does X cost", "is X worth it". Ask each one in ChatGPT with search on, in Google AI Mode, and in Perplexity. Record which brands are named and which URLs are cited. Repeat monthly. It takes an hour and it tells you more than most dashboards.

Then look at your own data. In Bing Webmaster Tools, confirm your key pages are indexed. In Search Console, note that AI Overview impressions and clicks are folded into normal Search performance, so you will not see them separately. In your server logs or CDN analytics, check that OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot are actually fetching pages. If they never visit, nothing downstream can work.

For ongoing tracking, Mavek's AI visibility tracker runs your buyer prompts every week across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, and reports which brands and URLs get cited over time. If you would rather compare the wider market first, see our roundup of AI visibility tools.

What ChatGPT SEO Does Not Do

It does not change what a model says from memory. If ChatGPT describes your product wrongly without searching, the fix is slow: consistent, widely published facts that make it into future training data, not a page tweak.

It does not guarantee a citation. Engines pick a handful of sources per answer, they vary from run to run, and being indexed is a precondition, not a promise. Track share of citations over many prompts, not a single screenshot.

It does not replace ranking. On Google in particular, AI Overviews mostly draw from pages that already rank. Skipping the ranking work to chase AI answers gets the order backwards.

And it does not need a special file. No llms.txt, no AI sitemap, no new markup. We cover why in our llms.txt guide. The wider practice of optimizing for language models, including the audit checklist, is in LLM SEO explained.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is ChatGPT SEO?

ChatGPT SEO is the work of making your pages retrievable and quotable by ChatGPT when it searches the web to answer a question. In practice that means being indexed by Bing and OpenAI's own OAI-SearchBot crawler, publishing pages that answer a specific question directly, and keeping the facts about your product consistent everywhere ChatGPT might read them.

Can ChatGPT cite sources?

Yes. When ChatGPT uses its search feature it shows the pages it drew on as linked citations in the answer, usually as a sources panel and inline links. When it answers from memory without searching, there are no citations, and what it says comes from training data that may be out of date. Only searched answers can send a reader to your site.

How do I show up in ChatGPT?

Make sure your site is verified in Bing Webmaster Tools and your new pages reach Bing quickly (IndexNow does this). Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt. Then publish pages that answer buyer questions in the first paragraph, with a clear product description, pricing and comparisons that are easy to quote. Check your progress by asking ChatGPT the questions your buyers ask and noting which sources it cites.

How do I rank in Google AI Overviews?

There is no separate submission or markup. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on pages that are indexed and eligible for snippets, using a query fan-out that runs several related searches. Pages that already rank well for the topic and its sub-questions are the ones most often pulled in, so the work is normal SEO plus writing passages that answer each sub-question cleanly.

Perplexity vs Google AI Mode: what is the difference for SEO?

Google AI Mode sits inside Google Search and leans on Google's index and ranking signals, so it mostly cites pages that already rank. Perplexity is a standalone product that runs a live web search on every query, cites many sources per answer, and tends to favor fresh pages and community discussion. Ranking on Google helps with both; recency and directness help more on Perplexity.

Should I block GPTBot?

Blocking GPTBot only opts you out of OpenAI model training. It does not stop ChatGPT search from citing you, because search uses OAI-SearchBot. If your goal is to be found in ChatGPT, keep OAI-SearchBot allowed no matter what you decide about GPTBot.
