Answer Engine Optimization (AEO): What It Is and How to Do It

Buyers now ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews the questions they used to type into a search box. AEO is how you become the answer. This guide covers what the term means, how answer engines choose what to cite, and the exact checklist to work through.

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring web content so that AI answer engines, such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity, can extract it, cite it and present it as the direct answer to a question. It builds on SEO but optimizes for being quoted inside a generated answer rather than ranked on a results page.

One disambiguation before anything else. AEO here means answer engine optimization, not the customs status (Authorized Economic Operator) or the retailer American Eagle Outfitters. If you searched "aeo" looking for either of those, this is the wrong page. If you searched it because a marketer used the acronym and you want to know what they meant, read on.

What Is an Answer Engine?

An answer engine is any system that takes a question and returns a written answer instead of a list of links. ChatGPT with search on, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity, Claude with web access and Gemini all qualify. So does the featured snippet at the top of a Google result, which was the original answer engine and still behaves like one.

The shift matters because of what the user sees. In a classic search, ten sites get a shot at the click. In an answer engine, the user reads one answer, and the two or three sources cited inside it get the attention. Everything else is invisible. AEO is the work of being one of those two or three.

How Answer Engines Pick Sources

Every answer engine follows the same rough loop: retrieve, read, synthesize, cite. It rewrites your question into one or more search queries, fetches a small set of pages from an index, reads the passages that look relevant, writes an answer, and attaches links to the passages it leaned on. Two parts of that loop are yours to influence: whether your page is in the index it searches, and whether your passage is the easiest one to lift.

Where each engine looks is the part most guides skip, and it changes what you should do first.

EngineHow it picks sourcesWhat you control
ChatGPT search Runs live web searches when the question needs current facts. Launched on Bing's index and Bing remains one of its search providers, alongside OpenAI's own crawler (GPTBot). Pages that are not in Bing are hard for it to cite. Bing Webmaster Tools, IndexNow, allow GPTBot in robots.txt
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode Built on Google's own index and ranking systems. Pulls passages from pages that already rank well for the query and related queries, then writes a summary with links. Normal Google SEO plus passage-level clarity, FAQ and article schema
Perplexity Searches the web for every answer and cites the pages it read. Favors pages that state the answer early and are fast to fetch. Allow PerplexityBot, fast pages, direct-answer paragraphs
Claude and Gemini Claude fetches pages when web search is on, using Anthropic's crawlers (ClaudeBot and its user-triggered fetcher). Gemini leans on Google's index. Both extract self-contained passages rather than whole pages. Allow ClaudeBot and Google-Extended, one fact per passage

The practical reading of that table: Google AI Overviews reward the SEO you already do, ChatGPT search rewards being in Bing, and every engine rewards a passage that states the answer in one place. Retrieval gets you into the room. Extractability gets you quoted.

AEO vs SEO

SEO earns a position. AEO earns a citation. That is the whole difference, and it explains why the two overlap so much and still need separate attention.

They share a base: a crawlable site, pages that load fast, clear headings, real expertise, links from sites the engines already trust. If your SEO is broken, your AEO will be too, because the engines retrieve from the same indexes Google and Bing build. There is no way to be cited by AI Overviews for a query you do not rank anywhere for.

They diverge in the unit of competition. SEO competes at the page and domain level: which URL deserves position one. AEO competes at the passage level: which paragraph, on which page, most cleanly answers this exact question. A 3,000-word guide that ranks third can lose the citation to a 400-word page that states the answer in its first sentence. That is why AEO feels different in practice even when the setup is the same. You are editing paragraphs, not building domains.

The third difference is the result. SEO produces a click you can measure in analytics. AEO often produces a mention with no click at all. The user reads that your product does X, and later searches for you by name or types your URL directly. Measurement has to change to keep up, which we cover below. For the separate but related GEO term, and how AEO, GEO and AIO relate, see AEO vs GEO.

The AEO Checklist

Seven items, in the order most sites should do them. The first five cost nothing but an afternoon.

  • Direct-answer paragraphs. Open every page and every H2 section with 40 to 60 words that answer the question outright. No preamble, no 'in this article'. An engine should be able to lift that paragraph and use it verbatim.
  • Question-shaped H2s. Write headings the way a person asks. 'How much does an SEO audit cost?' beats 'Pricing overview'. Engines match questions to headings before they match them to body copy.
  • FAQ and article schema. Add FAQPage schema to pages with real questions and Article schema with author and date to guides. Schema does not make you rank, it makes the page easier to parse. A free FAQ schema generator takes two minutes.
  • Entity clarity. Say exactly what you are, in plain words, on the homepage and About page. 'Mavek is an AI marketing platform for founders and lean teams' is an entity statement. Engines need that sentence to describe you correctly.
  • Crawlability for AI bots. Check robots.txt for GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended. Many security plugins and CDN rules block them by default. An engine cannot cite what it cannot fetch.
  • Bing and IndexNow. Verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools and switch on IndexNow so new pages reach Bing within hours. This is the shortest route into ChatGPT search that most sites have never switched on.
  • Original data. Publish something only you can publish: a survey, a benchmark, a price table you gathered, your own results. Engines prefer to cite a primary source over a page that paraphrases one.

Two of those deserve more than a bullet.

Direct-answer paragraphs are the highest-return edit on any existing page. Take each H2, read the first paragraph under it, and ask whether an engine could quote it on its own and have it make sense. Usually it cannot, because the paragraph refers to something above it or warms up for three sentences before saying anything. Rewrite it so the first sentence is the claim, the second is the number or the reason, and the third is the qualifier. Then move on. This single edit, across the twenty pages that matter, is most of what AEO is.

Crawler access is the one that silently kills everything else. Run a check for GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot against your robots.txt, your CDN's bot rules and your security plugin. Cloudflare's managed AI bot blocking, for example, is a single toggle that many sites have on without knowing. If you want to be cited, the crawlers need to be able to read the page. Our schema generator and FAQ schema generator handle the markup side; the crawler side is a robots.txt edit. If you have not set up Bing yet, the IndexNow setup guide is the three-minute version.

How to Measure AEO

You cannot measure AEO from analytics alone, because the win is often a mention that sends no click. The method that works is a prompt panel. Write down the 30 to 50 questions a buyer in your category would ask an AI (not keywords, questions), run each one through ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Perplexity and the others on a fixed schedule, and log three things per answer: is your brand mentioned, is your page cited, and which competitors appear. Your share of those mentions over time is the metric.

Add two sources to that. Google Search Console counts AI Overview and AI Mode impressions and clicks inside the normal Search performance report (it does not break them out separately), so the Google side is at least partly measurable for free. And your own analytics will show referrals from chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai as their own sources; small numbers today, but the trend line is the useful part.

Doing the prompt panel by hand is fine for a month and painful after that, which is why we built tracking into Mavek. The AI visibility tracker runs your prompt panel every week across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, per market, and reports mentions, citations and the competitors that appear beside you. What AEO Does Not Do

It does not substitute for ranking. Every engine retrieves from an index built by classic crawling and ranking, so a page with no authority and no rankings has nothing to be extracted from. Do AEO on top of SEO, not instead of it.

It does not produce fast traffic. Citations arrive in weeks, mentions build over months, and the click volume from AI engines is still a fraction of Google's. The reason to start now is that the engines are forming their view of your category now, and the sources they trust today tend to be the ones they keep citing.

It does not work on thin content. Restructuring a vague page into question headings and direct-answer paragraphs makes it easier to parse; it does not make it worth citing. Engines prefer primary sources, specific numbers and real experience. If a page has none of those, fix that before fixing the format.

And it does not need a separate team, tool stack or budget. Most of the checklist above is an editing pass on pages you already have. If you want that pass done for you, along with the SEO underneath it, that is what our SEO and AEO service covers. If you would rather run it yourself, the SEO agent handles the crawls, audits and drafts inside the platform.

Where to Start

Pick your ten most important pages. Check that GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot can fetch them. Verify the site in Bing and turn on IndexNow. Then rewrite the first paragraph under every H2 on those ten pages so it answers the heading in 40 to 60 words. Add FAQ schema where the page has genuine questions. Run your prompt panel once before you start and once a month after. That is a real AEO program, and it fits in a week. Frequently Asked Questions

What does AEO stand for?

AEO stands for answer engine optimization. It is the practice of writing and structuring web content so that AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity, and answer features like featured snippets, can extract it and present it as the direct answer to a question. In customs and trade, AEO means Authorized Economic Operator, which is unrelated.

What is AEO in marketing?

In marketing, AEO is the work of making your brand the answer an AI engine gives when a buyer asks a question in your category. It sits next to SEO and depends on it. The output is a citation, a mention, or a recommendation inside a generated answer, not a blue link on a results page.

Is AEO the same as SEO?

No, but they overlap heavily. SEO earns a position on a results page. AEO earns a citation or mention inside a generated answer. The technical base is the same (crawlable pages, clear structure, authority), and most AEO work is a sharper version of good on-page SEO. A page can rank well and never be cited, and the reverse also happens.

How is AEO different from GEO?

AEO focuses on being the extracted answer to a specific question. GEO (generative engine optimization) focuses on being included and cited when a generative engine synthesizes an answer from many sources. In practice the tactics overlap by around ninety percent and most teams treat them as one discipline. Our AEO vs GEO comparison covers the differences in detail.

How do I measure answer engine optimization?

Pick the 30 to 50 questions your buyers actually ask, run them through each engine on a schedule, and log whether your brand is mentioned, whether your page is cited, and who else appears. Track that share over time. Google Search Console folds AI Overview impressions into normal Search performance, and Mavek's AI visibility tracker automates the prompt runs across engines and markets.

Does AEO work for small sites?

Yes, and often better than classic SEO does. Answer engines pull passages, not domains, so a small site with a clear, direct, well-structured page on a narrow question can be cited ahead of a large site with a vague one. The fastest wins are usually crawler access, direct-answer paragraphs and getting into Bing, all of which cost nothing.

Want to know what ChatGPT says about you today?

Mavek asks the answer engines the questions your buyers ask, and shows you who gets recommended, who is invisible, and why.
