AEO vs GEO (and AIO): Same Goal, Different Emphasis

Four acronyms, one job: showing up when a buyer asks a machine a question. Here is what each term means, where it came from, the one table that separates them, and why you should not run them as separate projects.

AEO (answer engine optimization) is about being the direct answer to a question. GEO (generative engine optimization) is about being included and cited when an AI engine synthesizes an answer from many sources. AIO refers to Google AI Overviews specifically. All three build on SEO, share most of their tactics, and differ mainly in emphasis and origin.

The Four Terms in One Table

Read down the columns and the overlap is obvious. Read across the rows and the differences are real but narrow.

What AEO Means

Answer engine optimization is the practice of structuring web content so that AI answer engines, such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity, can extract it, cite it and present it as the direct answer to a question. The term predates the current wave of AI chat. It was used for voice assistants and featured snippets, where the engine returned one answer and the job was to be that answer. AI chat made the same problem far bigger, and the term came back with it.

AEO's emphasis is on the question. Its checklist reads like an editing guide: a 40 to 60 word answer under every heading, headings phrased the way people ask, FAQ schema, clear entity statements, and crawler access so the engines can fetch the page at all. The full version is in our answer engine optimization guide.

What GEO Means

Generative engine optimization is the practice of shaping web content so that generative engines, AI systems that search the web and write a synthesized answer, include and cite your pages and your brand in what they generate. The term comes from a November 2023 paper of the same name by researchers at Princeton, Georgia Tech, the Allen Institute for AI and IIT Delhi, which tested nine content tactics across 10,000 queries and found that citing sources, adding statistics and adding quotations boosted visibility in generated answers by up to 40 percent, while keyword stuffing did not help.

GEO's emphasis is on the evidence. Where AEO asks "does this paragraph answer the question", GEO asks "does this paragraph give the engine a reason to cite it": a source, a number, a quote, a dataset nobody else has. The background and the checklist are in our generative engine optimization guide.

What AIO Means

AIO is shorthand for Google AI Overviews, the generated summary Google places above the classic results for many queries, and by extension Google's AI Mode tab. It is not a discipline so much as a surface. Optimizing for AIO means optimizing for Google's AI layer, which draws almost entirely from pages Google already ranks well for the query and its neighbors. That makes AIO the AI search surface closest to traditional SEO: if you rank, you are eligible; if your passages are clear, you get pulled in.

The confusion in "AIO vs GEO" searches usually comes from treating them as peers. They are not. GEO is the practice; AIO is one of the engines the practice targets. Everything you do for AIO counts as GEO. The reverse is not true, because ChatGPT search draws on Bing's index and OpenAI's own crawler rather than Google's, so a page can be strong in AI Overviews and absent from ChatGPT, or the other way round.

Where They Actually Differ

Three differences survive scrutiny. The first is the unit of competition. AEO competes at the passage level for one question. GEO competes at the passage and brand level for inclusion in an answer that may cite five sources. AIO competes among pages Google already ranks. The second is emphasis: AEO leans on structure, GEO leans on evidence, AIO leans on existing rankings. The third is origin: AEO from marketing, GEO from a research paper, AIO from a Google product name.

What does not differ is the work. Allow GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot. Get into Bing with IndexNow. Put a direct answer under every H2. Cite a source, add a number, quote someone. Add FAQ schema where there are real questions. Publish original data. Run a fixed panel of buyer prompts through each engine every month and log who appears. That list serves AEO, GEO and AIO equally, which is the practical point of this post.

Why Mavek Treats Them as One Discipline

Splitting the work into three projects produces three half-finished checklists that edit the same pages. We run one pass, on one set of pages, measured by one prompt panel, and report it under one name. On the done-for-you side that is the SEO and AEO service, which covers classic SEO and the answer engine layer together. On the self-serve side the SEO agent handles the crawls, audits and drafts, and the AI visibility tracker runs the prompt panel across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. The wider view of how AI changes an SEO program is on our AI SEO page, and the tools that measure this space are compared in best AI visibility tools.

What This Comparison Does Not Settle

It does not tell you which engine matters most for your buyers. That depends on your market and category, and the only way to know is to run the prompt panel and see where you are missing. It does not mean the terms are interchangeable in every context: a researcher citing the GEO paper means something specific, and a Google product manager saying AIO means one feature. And it does not mean SEO is optional. Every one of these engines retrieves from an index built by crawling and ranking. The acronyms are layers on top of that, not a way around it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?

AEO (answer engine optimization) is about being the extracted answer to a specific question. GEO (generative engine optimization) is about being included and cited when a generative engine writes an answer from many sources. The tactics overlap almost entirely: direct-answer paragraphs, citations, statistics, crawler access and original data serve both. The names come from different places (marketing versus a 2023 research paper), not from different work.

What is AIO in SEO?

AIO stands for AI Overviews, the generated summary Google shows above its results for many queries, and by extension Google's AI Mode. Optimizing for AIO means optimizing for Google's AI layer specifically. It draws almost entirely from pages Google already ranks, so it is the AI search surface closest to classic SEO.

Is GEO the same as AIO?

No. GEO covers every generative engine (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and AI Overviews). AIO is one engine, Google's. Everything you do for AIO counts as GEO, but GEO also covers engines that do not use Google's index at all, such as ChatGPT search, which draws on Bing and OpenAI's own crawler.

SEO vs AEO vs GEO: which should I do first?

SEO first, because every answer engine retrieves from an index built by classic crawling and ranking. Then run the AEO and GEO checklist as one pass over the pages that already rank or should: crawler access, Bing and IndexNow, direct-answer paragraphs, citations and numbers, FAQ schema, original data. Treating them as three separate projects wastes effort.

Do I need separate tools for AEO and GEO?

No. Both are measured the same way, with a fixed panel of buyer questions run through each engine and logged for mentions and citations. One tracker covers both. Mavek's AI visibility tracker does this every week across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews; our best AI visibility tools post compares the alternatives.

Will AEO and GEO merge into one term?

In practice they already have. Most teams and most tools use AEO, GEO, AI SEO and LLM SEO to mean the same program of work, and Mavek runs them as one discipline under its SEO and AEO service. The distinction is useful for understanding where each idea came from, not for organizing a team.

One program for every answer engine.

Mavek runs SEO, AEO and GEO as one discipline: rank on Google, get cited by ChatGPT and AI Overviews, and see the prompt-by-prompt scoreboard.
