The Basics

What Is a UTM Code?

A UTM code is a set of parameters added to the end of a URL that tells your analytics tool where a click came from. UTM stands for Urchin Tracking Module. When a visitor clicks a tagged link, values like utm_source=newsletter and utm_medium=email flow into Google Analytics, so you can see exactly which campaign and channel drove the visit. The builder above assembles these tags for you in the correct format.

UTMs are how you connect marketing activity to results. Without them, most campaign traffic lands in your reports as a vague "direct" or "referral" bucket, and you cannot tell which email, ad, or post actually worked. Tag your links consistently and the picture gets clear: this is the foundation of marketing attribution, and it feeds every downstream metric you care about, including marketing ROI.

Mavek's analytics service takes this further by auto-tagging every campaign across channels and unifying the data, so your team never has to hand-build a tracking link again.

UTM Best Practices

Be consistent

Use lowercase and hyphens. "google" not "Google", "spring-sale" not "Spring Sale".

Keep it readable

Your future self will thank you. Use descriptive names that make reports easy to scan.

Document your conventions

Create a shared naming guide so your whole team tags campaigns the same way.

FAQ

UTM Questions, Answered

What is a UTM code?

A UTM code is a set of tags added to the end of a URL that tells your analytics tool where a click came from. UTM stands for Urchin Tracking Module. When someone clicks a tagged link, the tags (like utm_source=newsletter) flow into Google Analytics so you can see exactly which campaign, channel, and creative drove the visit.

What are the five UTM parameters?

The five standard parameters are utm_source (where the traffic comes from, e.g. google), utm_medium (the channel type, e.g. cpc or email), utm_campaign (the specific campaign name), utm_term (the paid keyword), and utm_content (which link or creative was clicked). Source, medium, and campaign are the three you should always set. The builder above fills all five.

What is the difference between UTM source and medium?

Source is the specific origin of the traffic, like google, facebook, or your newsletter name. Medium is the broad category of channel, like cpc, email, social, or referral. A rule of thumb: source answers who sent the visitor, medium answers how. For example, source=facebook with medium=social.

Are UTM parameters case sensitive?

Yes. Google Analytics treats Email and email as two separate values, which splits your reports and makes campaigns hard to compare. Always use lowercase and hyphens (spring-sale, not Spring Sale). Consistency here is the single biggest factor in clean campaign reporting.

Do UTM codes affect SEO?

Used on outbound and campaign links, no, they do not harm SEO. The risk is using them on internal links that get crawled and indexed, which can create duplicate URLs. Keep UTM tags on external campaign links (ads, emails, social) and never on your own internal navigation.

How do I see UTM data in Google Analytics?

In GA4, tagged traffic appears under Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition, where you can break down by session source, medium, and campaign. Because the data only flows in once links are tagged consistently, a shared naming convention matters as much as the tags themselves.

Automate your campaign tracking

Mavek auto-tags and tracks every campaign across every channel. No more manual UTM management.
